Reblogging to add a specific thing I’ve messed around with: blurring data is not secure. Blurred data can be recovered, with some trial and error. Just gotta guess the right values for the kernel (the blurring filter, basically) that was applied and you can “reverse” the blur effect (it’s not likely to be one to one, there will likely be some artifacts) well enough that a person could read data from the image. If they get it right. But they have as many tries to get the parameters right as they need.

Censor it as completely as you can, destroy any pixels that could give data.

Unfortunately I am no expert in security so I can’t give advice on what to do instead, I just know about undoing blurring because I messed around with image processing techniques last fall.

Maybe look up destructive censoring? You want to destroy the sensitive data, not transform it. It should not be recoverable.

I try to use the boxes filled in to try and cover the pixels completely, and then I (maybe unnecessarily, idk) take a screenshot of the image and send that. I don’t want to chance that the original image is recoverable when sent out, even though I’m pretty sure that’s not easily done. But I think designing the feature for sending edited images such that it contained the original image in its data would be a terrible idea. I doubt major companies do that but there is likely a lot of metadata in files other than images that you might send out.

It seems like sci-fi is really influential on how people perceive technology, not only whether it is good or bad, but what they think technology can do.

It's a big problem with generative AI that we're calling it AI. That suggests it has an emergent property that allows it to work like actual intelligence, rather than just aggregating together a really big amount of data into a map of how sentences or images tend to be formed.

The ability to make a computer find patterns in huge sets of complicated data and then analyze more data based upon the existing patterns is a great thing. You can give the computer pictures taken by a satellite, slides showing specimens, or anything and automate the process of sorting through it.

Unfortunately, if you do this using written language found online as the data, and make the computer generate sentences based upon the patterns it learned, people do not think "Wow, it 'knows' a lot about how sentences tend to be made." Instead they will assign meaning to the sentences themselves, and think the computer "knows" about the things those sentences mean. Which causes trouble.

An AI that knows enough about language to generate text that can be easily confused with meaningful writings of a human doesn't seem very useful to me.

But sci-fi is full of AIs that are sapient and can communicate using language, which is clearly an astonishing feat of technology, so everybody decides that the minor party trick of making a computer "talk" like a person by giving it a lot of data about language is a huge advancement that will transform the world...

so this is 1000% a case about transformative works. the issues over the training data are muddled under fair use law, so disney is pivoting hard into "don't steal my OCs!!!" territory which will have insane repercussions.

genAI has a lot of problems as it is being implemented under capitalism but genuinely disney needs a massive L here. otherwise this is going to empower giant corporations to go after independent artists even harder than before and take down any kind of fanworks that exist, monetized or not.

AI DISTURBANCE "OVERLAYS" DO NOT WORK!

To all the artists and folks who want to protect their art against AI mimicry: all the "AI disturbance" overlays that are circulating online lately DON'T WORK!

Glaze's disturbance (and now the Ibis Paint premium feature, apparently. Not sure.) modifies the image on a code-level, it's not just an overlayed effect but it actually affects the image's data so AI can't really detect and interpret the code within the image. From the Glaze website:

Can't you just apply some filter, compression, blurring, or add some noise to the image to destroy image cloaks? As counterintuitive as this may be, the high level answer is that no simple tools work to destroy the perturbation of these image cloaks. To make sense of this, it helps to first understand that cloaking does not use high-intensity pixels, or rely on bright patterns to distort the image. It is a precisely computed combination of a number of pixels that do not easily stand out to the human eye, but can produce distortion in the AI's “eye.” In our work, we have performed extensive tests showing how robust cloaking is to things like image compression and distortion/noise/masking injection. Another way to think about this is that the cloak is not some brittle watermark that is either seen or not seen. It is a transformation of the image in a dimension that humans do not perceive, but very much in the dimensions that the deep learning model perceive these images. So transformations that rotate, blur, change resolution, crop, etc, do not affect the cloak, just like the same way those operations would not change your perception of what makes a Van Gogh painting "Van Gogh."

• Relaxing into his warm frame, you let the feel of his palm sliding against your spine lull you and rest your cheek against him, feeling his spark thrumming under you as familiar as your own heartbeat. Listening to him describe the cities of his world, and hearing the wistful longing in his voice, leaves a bitter ache inside you. He misses his home and it’s something you can’t even begin to understand when he’s told you his world was devastated by their war. That there’s no going home for him or any of them. Eyes closing as his servos of his other hand slide against the back of yours, you look up at him. “I’m sorry,” you whisper.

• Venting softly to stir your hair, he looks down at you in surprise. And it is what it is, but that you’re unhappy because he’s unhappy about a world you’ve never even seen means so much. Shifting his plating, there’s a flicker of guilt as his spark snares you and you startle against him. But you don’t resist as he wraps himself around you and that delicate spark he can only just sense. Offering you images of Iacon’s skyline, the exhilaration and freedom of flight. Watching you drift through his memories, feeling your joy sparking through him as he follows you. Circling and studying that inconsistent, gossamer thin shadow of an incomplete bond clinging to your light. We could go flying, he offers, stalling because he knows you’re going to be upset with him for this. Won’t want to understand it’s necessary at first, but you’ll forgive him. You always do. • Reaching for a new memory when he offers it, your breath catches as a different alien city glitters beneath you, seen from the air the way he’d seen it. And the connection stretches and snaps, his servos catching your upper arm when you slide half out of his lap. “What did you do?” Can’t breathe, shaking with that awful, wrenching wrongness and it hurts.

• “Our spark is fine,” he soothes, unsettled as you cringe away when he tries to pull you to him. Like you’re afraid of him. Closing his plating, he drags you back to him, hooking an arm around you to keep you there as you splay a hand against him, upset and almost panicking, you’re breathing much quicker than he’s used to. Had it hurt? He’s doesn’t know, but hates the thought. That twists guiltily through him as he curls himself tighter around you. Hadn’t wanted it to hurt, but he had to do it. Had to sever Soundwave’s claim to you. “It’s alright. It’s over.” His own spark aching unpleasantly, unsettled by your distress. You hadn’t known Soundwave that long, not really. Sliding his servos up your spine, his wings droop slightly. “I’m here.” And he’s all you need, because you’re all he needs. Even if you can’t see that he had to sever that leash. Can’t let Soundwave or anyone else control you or him.

• Staggering and nearly dropping the stack of data pads in his hands, it feels like being blindsided. Like when he’d lost the feel of you in his mind, but he can still sense your emotions and you’re upset. Not just upset, hurting. And he can’t sense his bond, the loss almost crippling. Denta clenching behind his mask, his head turns as Megatron looks up in surprise, chin propped on a fist. Aware of the furious sound he’s making, as he storms off the bridge and through the halls. And he’s going to strangle that self-obsessed, paranoid idiot.

• Aware that whatever upset Soundwave is something he probably doesn’t want to be involved in, Megatron is still tempted to go see the fallout. To see what’s made Soundwave that furious. Venting tiredly, he debates following. Sure that he knows exactly where the communications officer is going and that this is somehow about Starscream. It always is.

HOW TO GENERATE CHART:

Step 1: Go to Astro.com

Head over to astro.com.

Step 2: Create Both Individual Profiles

Click "Free Horoscopes" > "Extended Chart Selection".

If you haven't already, create a profile for each person involved under "Add New Astro Data".

Step 3: Create the Davison Relationship Chart

In the Extended Chart Selection menu:

Under "Chart type", select "Davison Relationship Chart" (not the Composite midpoint method, but the real Davison).

Select the two individuals for the chart.

Generate the Davison Chart and Under where it say "Save Default Settings", there should be another option to "Add to "My Astro". (Make sure you don't already have too many profiles or it won't be there).

Click "Add to "My Astro" and the chart should create it's own profile.

Step 4: Generate the North Node Persona Chart

Go back to the main menu and click "Horoscope For". You should see a profile that says "Dav. Rel. (your name) + (their name).

Click that Profile, go under "Chart type", select "Persona Chart" and Generate.

Once you go to the Chart, Click where it says "Moon" and scroll down and select "asc. Lunar Node". Hit "Go" and there is your North Node Persona Chart for your Davison Relationship Chart.

Now that you have your chart; here are some observations/placements to look for:

Explanation: The bright clusters and nebulae of planet Earth's night sky are often given the names of flowers or insects, and its whopping 3 light-year wingspan, NGC 6302 is no exception. With an estimated surface temperature of about 250,000 degrees C, the central star of the planetary nebula is transforming into a white dwarf star, becoming exceptionally hot, and shining brightly in ultraviolet light. The central star is hidden from direct view by a torus of dust, but its energetic ultraviolet light ionizes atoms in the nebula. In this sharp, telescopic view composed with narrowband image data, the ionized hydrogen and doubly ionized oxygen atoms are shown in their characteristic red and blue-green hues to reveal a stunning complex of knots and filaments within the nebula's wing-like bipolar outflows. NGC 6302 lies about 4,000 light-years away in the arachnologically correct constellation of the Scorpion (Scorpius).
